Dance

The aim of Newlands' Dance Department is to instil a love of dance. With an emphasis on developing the confidence of each individual, the pupils are given the opportunity to realise their own ability and talent.
Classical Ballet is the core subject in the Dance Department of the Performing Arts Course.

The appreciation of technique, and of discipline required to attain this, provides a sound base for other dance forms, and the importance of good early training cannot be over emphasised. It should be noted, however, that students may take part in the Course without participating in the Ballet element, although this is not encouraged.

Modern , Jazz, Contemporary, Tap and Choreography are also studied, in addition to Pilates. There is a nurturing of musicality and self-expression, and there are opportunities for both non-syllabus classes and for a number of performances, both inside and out of school. Suitable children are also entered for competitive festivals.

Visits to dance productions are arranged on a regular basis and guest classes are given in a variety of dance forms including Pas de Deux.

Pupils will follow the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) syllabus for Grade work, and both the ISTD and Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabi for Majors. GCSE, AS and A Level Dance is available as an option in Newlands Manor. Students in the Sixth Form may also be prepared for the ISTD Foundation in Dance Instruction teaching qualification.
