Music
Music plays an important role in life at Newlands. All students are encouraged to play to their existing musical strengths with a full range of instrumental and vocal tuition being available. Broad participation is encouraged in groups, including choirs singing both sacred and secular repertoire, string orchestra and large and small wind ensembles. Termly concerts and performances range from informal lunchtime recitals, both in and out of school, to traditional carol services. There is a large entry for local festivals and stage musicals are regularly performed.
The Performing Arts Course includes extra activities in addition to weekly singing lessons: these focus on singing technique for both solo and group work, and cover both classical repertoire and songs from current musicals. Alongside, the emphasis on performance, the music department offers a range of options for GCSE, AS and A2 level courses, and the use of music technology including multi-track recording and computer-based sequencing is encouraged at all levels.
