Newlands Library News Issue 21 June 2010

The Prep Library at Newlands is situated at the front of the main school building with a spectacular view of the grounds and Seaford Head from its large bay window.

It is a friendly welcoming area with vibrant colourful displays to encourage pupils with all interests.

The library is a valued resource within the school both with pupils and staff.

From whole class/small group lessons to individual research for projects and homework all are welcome in the library. We also hold enjoyable story sessions for nursery and pre-prep classes.

Pupils from years 1- 8 have access to the library at lunch and break time. They can borrow books through the computerised library issue system and our school Librarian Mrs Maxine de Garis is always on hand and happy to assist with this. Help is available with all aspects of library research also.

Pupils are actively encouraged to read for pleasure and a wide selection of fiction genres are available to support this.

Our well stocked library also has a vast range of non-fiction titles and these are catalogued to a Dewey System as in mainstream libraries.

DVD’s, CD’s and Videos are also available for loan.

There is a web based library catalogue of all items in the school library and this can be accessed by staff and pupils.

Pupils can borrow up to 3 items from the library for a 2 week loan period. Renewal of unfinished books is available and reservations for items out on loan can also be made.

Pupils enjoy participating in various library activities.  They vote for their favourite ‘Book of the Month’, write book reviews and nominate ‘wish list’ book choices for the library. Competitions are held along with fun library book based activities.

Pupil involvement and participation in the school library is extremely important to us at Newlands.

A library newsletter is sent out monthly to all parents informing and updating them on library activities and promoting forthcoming events.

Pupils are always welcome and encouraged to enjoy their school library.

A brand new LRC (Learning Resource Centre) is currently planned for The Manor here at Newlands for curriculum years 9-13.
