A Novel Idea

At a time when so many children are attracted to computer games, it is pleasing to know that pupils at Newlands have developed a passion for books.

For many pupils the Prep Library has become a place of adventure and escapism as they become absorbed by the world of books. Librarian, Maxine de Garis has taken an active role in creating a love of the library and a love of reading. Organising regular competitions and activities, Maxine ensures that there is something to interest every child.

‘World Book Day’ on March 4th provided another opportunity to engage pupils in books. Library activities on offer to children from the Nursery up to Year 8 include book cover design, games of book consequences, the creation of a character collage and creative writing.

An average of 33 books are borrowed from the school library each day. A team of six library assistants, all aged between eleven and twelve, take great pride in operating a support rota to assist Maxine and the regular number of visitors to the library.

Maxine said: “ It is very rewarding to see a child engrossed in a book. I hope that time spent in our library will create a love of books that will last a lifetime.”
