Visit to Charleston Farmhouse

We were blessed. It was a sunny day, one of the few we've had this year, and Newlands School students were lucky enough to be able to enjoy the sunshine during their visit to the famous Charleston Farmhouse.

As soon as we arrived the students were captivated by the surroundings. Some sketched, some photographed everything in sight and some were just mesmerised by the hungry goldfish in the boating lake.

For the tour round the house itself we were split into two groups, each consisting of eight students and two staff. The guides were full of knowledge about the house, its former occupants and the wonderful art and decoration that covers every surface. The pupils learnt about anything and everything from the beginnings of the Omega Workshop to the tantrums of the children who lived at Charleston.

Having seen such an inspirational house many of the pupils are now starting to engage in art and writing projects. I look forward to seeing the results.
