Newlands School now boasts five published authors amongst its Year 8 pupils. At the end of last term Edward Bree, Alfie Dyer, Louie Smee, Amy Steadman and Saphra Turkheim entered the 2009 ‘Mini Sagas’ competition run by the Young Writers Association. The pupils had to write a complete story in 50 words or less. If you think this is an easy task think again. It’s no mean feat getting suspense, surprise and structure into so few words. Get yourself a copy of the anthology and discover how “A Sailor’s Disaster” ended or what happens when vampires are denied human blood!
A Sailor’s Disaster by Alfie Dyer
Things are looking bad at sea. Today is going to be a rough and long day. ‘Captain, we’ve got good news. The enemy ship’s ours!’ All of a sudden there is a loud noise and the ship shakes! ‘Captain, we’ve struck a hole in the hull! We are going down!’
The Keys by Louie Smee
The son walked through the open door. He crept through the hall, tiptoeing up the steps. He reached the top. Creeping into the bedroom, he reached for the keys. He turned back towards the stairs. Suddenly there was a scream, ‘Give me my car keys back!’ shouted his dad angrily.
Vegetarian Vampires? by Amy Steadman
I’m shivering, I’m cold, I’m hungry. Most of all I’m thirsty. For blood. At Vampire Valley there is no human blood. The vampires here only drink animals. But not me. I’ll change their foolish ways. I’ll get blood down their throats if it’s the last think I do. Watch me!
