It is a sad and shocking statistic that 16.9% of boys and 16.8% of girls between the years of 2 to 10 in England are currently classified as obese.
At Newlands School an education in the importance of a fit and healthy lifestyle starts early and on Wednesday, 30th January children in the Pre-Prep start getting physical!
Statistics state that more than half of English adults are now either overweight or obese.
Obesity is linked to many serious health risks in both children and adults. This includes type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, respiratory illnesses, joint and movement problems and psychological disorders, such as depression and low self-esteem and lowered academic achievement.
Evidence suggests that obese children are likely to go on to become obese adults, with health problems escalating in seriousness with age. Without intervention, it is forecast that one in five children — almost 1 million — will be obese by 2010.
Head of Pre-Prep, Maria Angelakis said: “It is very important that our children understand they need to maintain healthy bodies to have a fit mind and bright future. By establishing a regular exercise regime at this early age we are setting them on the right path for a happy and healthy life.”
No wonder the older students achieved such good GCSE & “A” level results last year (having its best ever GCSE results with 78% of candidates achieving 5 or more A* - C grades and at “A” level, a 100% overall pass rate with over 50% of grades at A and B), when the Pre Prep pupils are given such a sound sporting & academic basis to build upon throughout their Newlands education!
Findings from the Cohert studies in 10 primary schools in Leeds during 1996 to1999 lends further support to reports that levels of obesity in Britain are increasing at an appreciable rate in primary school children and that this major public health issue needs urgently addressing in young children.
Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Families has confirmed the Government is ahead of a 2008 target to get 85% of pupils doing at least two hours of sports a week but secondary schools are lagging behind primaries.
Newlands Pre-Prep is a perfect example of a primary school taking-up this initiative and ensuring their pupils are fit and keen to maintain this healthy life-style through-out their school career and beyond into adult life. On Wednesday 30th January, the four to seven year old pupils will be enjoying:
Newlands provides a fully rounded and caring, quality education at affordable prices, where Early Years Educational Entitlement Funding is accepted. The Pre Prep School ensures that children will be in small classes to experience more one to one attention with the teacher, which in turn will provide excellent academic results and personalised programmes for the pupils. The children also have the benefit of an early screening programme so that dyslexia and other learning difficulties can be identified and then supported.
