On Tuesday 4th December the children in Newlands Pre Prep held a successful Trading Day. The children were given a £5 business loan and were challenged to double their money and to pledge £1 for charity and another £1 for savings. They could then keep the rest of the money made as profit. Some chose to spend part of their takings to encourage shopping with one another. The net profit, made after expenses and pledges were deducted, came to £170. 00

The children set up their kiosks in the library and by 13:45 they were sold out! Posters and price lists went up and some children even attempted writing a simple business plan. It was wonderful to see how many creative ideas emerged from this exercise. Staff and pupils kindly supported them and some parents came along to help the little ones with the giving of change.
Some of the exciting ideas included dog biscuits, a raffle, Xmas decorations, Xmas cards, candles, bracelets, chocolates, cupcakes, gift boxes and gift sets, badges, reindeer food, personalised embroidered caps and a lucky dip. Prices of goods ranged between 20p to £2 each.
Head of Pre-Prep, Maria Angelakis said: “It is very important that children understand the value of money and learn basic financial skills. The subject of economics and life skills form part of the Government’s ‘Every Child Matters’ campaign. The Trading Day proved to be an excellent way of introducing the children to the subject.”
