Year 8 Festival Students

Sixty eight students from Newlands School were entered into the 50th Eastbourne Music and Arts Festival held at the Winter Garden in Eastbourne between the 8th and 19th February.

Entering a range of classes from music to speech and drama and dance, a total of 18 distinctions were awarded and one honours.  Amongst the successes were Ruth Godfrey and Amy Steadman who won the Ena Combe Challenge Cup for the overall highest mark in the Shakespeare classes.

Newlands also won two Choral Speaking classes with the over 13 year olds winning both the Elizabeth Power Cup and the Devonshire Park Theatre Club Cup.  The Mayor of Eastbourne will present the cups at the Festival Concert on March 7th.

Outstanding students included Edward Bree (Year 8) and Aimee Dyer (Year 11) who won a total of 11 distinctions between them.

Tula Dyer, Head of Drama praised the dedication and creativity of her students.
