Sport at Newlands
Sport plays a significant part in the life of the school. Superb on-site facilities include extensive playing fields, a large, modern sports hall, an indoor heated swimming pool and hard surfaced netball and tennis courts. The adjoining Leisure Centre is also regularly used for a variety of activities, as are the two nearby golf courses. With the school being set in a designated area of natural beauty, outdoor activities such as hiking and canoeing are also available.
Team games are taken seriously and girls and boys play regular fixtures against other schools, at all age ranges. Netball and hockey are the main winter sports for the girls whilst the boys play soccer and rugby. The main summer game for the boys is cricket whilst the girls play rounders. Athletics is well taught and enjoyed by all. A range of other sports is on offer including swimming, basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf and table tennis. Activities such as sub-aqua diving, sailing and riding can also be offered for those who are interested.
The Physical Education Department is a strong faculty, well supported by other members of staff.
