Newlands has long been known for the quality of its Pastoral Care. One of the first aspects of the school that visitors mention is the unique atmosphere within the school, which the entire campus. Happy, cheerful and quietly purposeful, there is a sense of mutual respect, which emanates from pupils and staff alike, which underpins the work of the school.
Being a small school, each pupil is well known and valued. There are a number of adults who have responsibility for overseeing the wellbeing of each pupil, which allows the child to seek help, when needed, from a member of staff with whom they feel most comfortable. The Form tutor is often the first port of call, but there are also heads of year, senior members of staff with specific responsibility for pastoral matters, Gannon Centre staff, who have direct contact with their individual students, matrons and boarding house staff, all of whom are available to offer personal counselling and care.
The Headmaster holds regular meetings with senior pupils in both the Manor and Prep School where the views of the student body can be aired and examined. This allows the pupils the opportunity to feel part of the decision making process of the school and helps to engender the feeling of unity and togetherness which is so prevalent at the school. A weekly staff meeting dealing solely with pastoral matters is held in order to keep the entire staff appraised of any issues which need to be understood in order to maintain the highest possible standards of care for each individual pupil, and the close liaison between the school and the parents ensures that any relevant information that needs to be known about the welfare needs of the student body is quickly ascertained and disseminated.
