Learning Support

The Gannon Centre

The Accelerated Learning Unit at Newlands is known as the Gannon Centre, named after a former member of staff, Mr Tom Gannon. The aim of the Gannon Centre is to identify and support those who need extra help or those who require extension.
All the support at the Gannon Centre is on a one-to-one basis, and while some pupils require long-term support others only need to be helped for a few months to help them quickly to get up to speed.

Newlands offers specific support in literacy, maths and science, but we also teach study skills and have consistently high expectations for all our pupils. We aim to boost their self-esteem, particularly when they arrive at Newlands discouraged and frustrated by their difficulties. Our aim is to empower students to master basic literacy and numeracy skills as quickly as possible.

Each pupil follows a structured, multi-sensory programme devised specifically for them, based on either our knowledge of the student's needs or developed according to the recommendations contained within an Educational Psychologist's report. We support the use of touch-typing and technology to aid learning.

Newlands has an outstanding reputation for helping our dyslexic students to achieve excellent academic results. The Accelerated  Learning Centre liaises regularly with mainstream staff across the campus, which ensures that all pupils have their individual needs met.  The Accelerated Learning Centre/Gannon Centre staff are a highly qualified team of experienced teachers who enjoy a very positive partnership with parents and pupils. They are always happy to experiment with new ideas and approaches in order to maximise the help offered. The Gannon Centre provides workspace for individuals to undertake private study, always with a sympathetic and helpful advisor at hand. The Gannon Centre/Accelerated Learning Centre at Newlands aims to provide students with the skills needed to feel at ease and able to study confidently in the school environment.  All the Gannon Centre students follow the school’s mainstream curriculum and their support programmes are implemented during the course of the day, in 40 minute periods, by agreed withdrawal.
