Manor (13-18 YEARS)

Year 9

Entry into Year 9 is a vital stage of secondary education and is the transition between Key Stage 3 and GCSE. Students in Year 9 at Newlands follow a broad curriculum which provides a firm foundation for GCSE studies. At the end of the Spring Term in Year 9 students will be asked to choose the subjects they wish to study for GCSE and during Year 9 they will have been given the opportunity to sample a large majority of the subjects offered at Newlands for GCSE.

Transfer from the Prep School to Newlands Manor is facilitated by the fact that most Prep School pupils will have had several opportunities to visit the Manor, and many teachers teach in both the Manor and the Prep School. Students will find much that is familiar, but may find that teaching styles and daily life have some differences. Those joining Newlands for the first time in Year 9 will be made very welcome and the small class sizes and informal atmosphere should ensure that they soon feel at home.

Students in the Manor are expected to take greater responsibility for themselves and their learning. Each day they are given homework to do, which generally takes about 1 hour. This can sometimes be completed during Prep sessions during the school day; otherwise it is done at home or at the Boarding House in the evening.

Students are placed into sets for English, Mathematics, Science and Modern Languages, and for some subjects are taught in their form group. Each student is allocated to a Tutor Group overseen by the Form Tutor who is responsible for the pastoral care of each student in the group.

Year 10&11

The GCSE Options Guide outlines the courses offered at Newlands Manor and should enable you and your son or daughter to make informed choices about their academic future.

There are subjects that every student will take as a matter of course. These are referred to as the ‘core' subjects and comprise English, Mathematics and Science. English Literature is offered to most students as part of the English course. Students then choose a maximum of 5 options. Students who have commitments within the Theatre Arts programme may be advised to restrict the number of options chosen to allow time for independent study.

Information within the Guide is correct at the time of publication, but changes, such as choice of examination board, may be made by Departments. We aim to offer as much flexibility as possible within the constraints of the timetable.

GCSE courses currently offered are:

French, Music, Spanish, Drama, History, Dance, Latin, Classical Civilisation, Geography, Religious Studies, Art, Business Studies, Textiles, Diploma in Digital Applications

Design Technology, ICT, Food and Nutrition and Physical Education
