About Seaford

Newlands is situated in the local town of Seaford, a coastal town in the county of East Sussex, on the south coast of England.

Located east of Newhaven and Brighton and just west of Eastbourne, it is roughly 67 miles away from London. Seaford is the largest town in the Lewes district with a population of about 23,000.

The Seven Sisters Country Park can be explored just around the corner and Seaford lies at the foot of a hill range called the South Downs. The town centre enjoys glimpses of the sea and of Seaford Head, an imposing chalk cliff which dominates the beautiful coastline.

Seaford’s main attraction is its beach, proving very popular with tourists in the summer. Seaford lifeguards patrol the beach and water each weekend during the spring and summer months. The town also has a shopping centre to ensure rainy days are catered for and a museum that offers a fascinating collection of material from pre-historic times to the present day.

Seaford’s railway station was built in the 19th century and allowed the town to become easily accessible from London and Lewes.

Seaford is currently part of the Lewes Parliamentary constituency. In 2010 the general election saw Norman Baker, the Liberal Democrat, return as MP for the Lewes.

In 2009, Seaford became the first south east town to appoint a Young Mayor. The town’s youth voted Oscar Hardy as Young Mayor and Eleanor Homan, as deputy. As of 2010 Eleanor Homan has become Mayor and she now has a new deputy. The project was started by Councillor Carolyn Lambert and continues to give the young people of Seaford a voice in both the town council and district.

Between the late 19th century and the 1950’s, Seaford was renowned as a ‘school town’. The many preparatory schools and independent schools were the main employers in the town. Seaford is still home to a number of preparatory schools but Newlands remains the only independent boarding school in the town that caters for children of all ages and requirements.
