Pastoral Care

Newlands has long been known for the quality of its Pastoral Care. One of the first aspects of the school that visitors mention is the unique atmosphere within the school. Happy, cheerful and quietly purposeful, there is a sense of mutual respect, which emanates from pupils and staff alike, which underpins the work of the school.

Being a relatively small school, each pupil is well known and valued. There are a number of adults who have responsibility for overseeing the wellbeing of each pupil, which allows the child to seek help, when needed, from a member of staff with whom they feel most comfortable.

The Form tutor is often the first port of call, but there are also Heads of Year and Senior Members of staff with specific responsibility for pastoral matters, all of whom are available to offer personal counseling and care.

A weekly staff meeting dealing solely with pastoral matters is held in order to keep the entire staff appraised of any issues which need to be understood in order to maintain the highest possible standards of care for each individual pupil, and the close liaison between the school and the parents ensures that any relevant information that needs to be known about the welfare needs of the student body is quickly ascertained and disseminated.

Pupils of all ages are able to express their views and voice any concerns through the School Parliament, which is run by the Year 11 students and facilitated by the Deputy Head and the Head of Seniors.
