Surrounding Countryside

Newlands School is very fortunate to be surrounded by an area of such outstanding natural beauty.

To the north, Seaford looks out to the South Downs and along the coast towards the east, are the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs.

The highest point on the Seven Sisters trail is known as Beachy Head and has a visitor’s centre with spectacular views out to sea and towards the lighthouse. The South Downs walk is a famous trail that reaches Seaford at the far eastern end of the route. The footpath follows the famous Seven Sisters chalky cliff edge and past Beachy Head. The trail is one of the best in England and provides an opportunity to indulge in the open space of the beautiful Sussex countryside. This stretch of the coast is recognised for its geological and ecological features..

The River Cuckmere cuts through the South Downs in its own valley. It reaches the English Channel at Cuckmere Haven which is situated between Seaford and the Seven Sisters cliff face. The Cuckmere Valley Nature Reserve is located in the lower estuary section of the river. The valley plays a crucial role in nature conservation. It has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is planned as a National Park.

Seven Sisters Country Park is a large chalk grassland site that can be explored nearby and lies somewhat on the seaward stretch of the Cuckmere valley and partly onto the hills of the Seven Sisters.
