Newlands Manor School is the name of the Senior Department at Newlands School. Pupils enter the Manor in Year 9 at the age of 13 and can stay through the sixth form.
Entry into Year 9 is a vital stage of secondary education and is the transition between Key Stage 3 and GCSE. Students in Year 9 at Newlands follow a broad curriculum which provides a firm foundation for GCSE studies.
At the end of the Spring Term in Year 9 students choose the subjects they wish to study for GCSE and during Year 9 they will have been given the opportunity to sample a large majority of the GCSE subjects offered at Newlands.
Transfer from Newlands Prep School to Newlands Manor is facilitated by the fact that most Prep School pupils will have had several opportunities to visit the Manor, and many teachers teach in both the Manor and the Prep School.
Students will find many aspects of life in the Manor School familiar, but may find that teaching styles and daily life have some differences.
Those joining Newlands for the first time in Year 9 will be made very welcome and the small class sizes and informal atmosphere should ensure that they soon feel at home.
Students in the Manor School are expected to take greater responsibility for themselves and their learning. Each day they are given homework to do, which generally takes about 1 hour. This can sometimes be completed during prep sessions during the school day; otherwise it is done at home or at the Boarding House in the evening.
Students are placed into sets for English, Mathematics, Science and Modern Languages, and for some subjects are taught in their form group. Each student is allocated to a Tutor Group overseen by the Form Tutor who is responsible for the pastoral care of each student in the group. This system aims to ensure that students feel they are well supported and cared for in every aspect of school life.
